Court Sentences Man To 45 Years Imprisonment For Stealing Governor’s Handset
Justice Oyejide Falola, who precided over the case, found the accused guilty on six counts, which included conspiracy, stealing and fraud.
Justice Falola thereafter sentenced Mr Ighodalo to 10-year imprisonment for the first three counts and five years for each of the last three which included impersonation, obtaining property by falsehood and collusion.
The Judge explained that the convict deserved the sentence and held that the convict used the phone to obtain N500, 000 from the Owa of Ilesa, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, while he obtained N200, 000 from Shengen Rahman, an associate of the governor.
The defence counsel, Mr. Amaechi Ngwu pleaded with the court to be lenient with his client by giving him the minimum punishment.
But Justice Jide Falola of the high court in Osogbo, the state capital, discountenanced the plea and sentenced Kelvin to 10 years imprisonment without an option of fine.

Fierce shootout was witnessed on Sunday between the police and the small army of AK-47-wielding gangsters in what might have gone down as one of the biggest casino hits in the country, but for the swift intervention of the Jo'burg police department..
Armed with a number of firearms and travelling in at least two different cars, the 19 suspects were stopped before their plan went into full swing at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on Sunday.
The task team pounced on the gang at about 7am. A shootout broke out, and after the dust had settled, police counted at least 15 men in custody, with four of them under guard in hospital.
A five-year-old girl was slightly wounded on her head and hand, when she was hit by a stray bullet that apparently went through a hotel window.
SAPS spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said police had been tipped off about the planned heist. The police’s intelligence unit immediately sprang into action.
Dlamini described the operation as “very big”, with officers, including the specialised Tactical Response Team, called in from across Gauteng and deployed at strategic points in and around the casino, which is close to OR Tambo International Airport.
None of the police officers was injured in the shootout.

In an interview with the New York Daily News, Clinton Brown said that while he understand CB's attraction to RiRi, they are better off on their own. He told the paper, "I personally really didn’t want him and Rihanna back together."
The elder Brown, who split from CB's mom when he was 6, thinks the on-again/off-again couple does not have the proper balance to maintain a good relationship, explaining, "You have to have someone who is spontaneous and whimsical but you also have to have someone who is grounded and logical."
Clearly neither Chris nor Rihanna would be described as "grounded" or "logical."

Soyinka Wins Lifetime Achievement of the Anisfield-Wolf Award

Fire at psychiatric hospital in Russia kills 38 amid fears patients were sedated and strapped to their beds
A fire has torn through a psychiatric hospital in Russia, killing 38 people, many of them in their beds.
The blaze broke out at the single-storey hospital building in the village of Ramensky, 70 miles north of Moscow, at around 2am local time this morning.
There were 41 people believed to be inside the building at the time – 36 patients, three nurses and two doctors.
Only three people – believed to be a nurse and two patients – escaped the fire, prompting speculation the patients were heavily sedated or strapped down and unable to escape.
At least 29 people were burned alive, said Irina Gumennaya, a spokeswoman for the federal Investigative Committee.

Examination hall collapses in Taraba State, Nigeria, three students killed
The incident occurred at about 6:38 p.m., local time on Thursday at a private secondary school at Mararaba, Donga Local Government in the northeast Taraba State, Chairman of Donga Local Government, Douglas Ndatse told GistMedia Nigeria.
Douglas said the storey building housing the examination hall carved in as the college students numbering over 500 were about to commence Biology Science exam.
A police source told GistMedia Nigeria that the students had barely been served their question papers for the day examination when the building suddenly collapsed.
A total of 560 candidates were writing WAEC in the school.
Some of the students were said to have complained of the building's cracks even before the commencement of their examinations.
Some of the injured persons who could not assess medical service at the community have been taken to the CRCN Hospital at Takum, a nearby town.
Hospital sources said 30 of the 200 injured students brought to the hospital were in critical condition, adding that some of them may be flown to Abuja and other Nigerian cities for better medical attention.

Soccer fan shot by police in Northern Nigeria
"The match was called off after Heartland refused to continue the game after a fan was shot in the foot by police inside the stadium and the fans protested," Pillars media officer Idris Malikawa disclosed.
"The fan was said to have done something illegal - he has been rushed to hospital."
The match was goalless after half an hour before this incident.
"Pillars fans would have to be commended for the way and manner they comported themselves during the problem," said Malikawa.
"The situation was brought to normal but Heartland refused to continue for fear of their safety despite assurances from the match officials."
However, Heartland media officer Cajetan Nwokpara gave a different account, saying some home fans invaded the pitch.
"Our match was inconclusive because some home fans invaded the pitch with knives, cutting the net and trying to remove the goal post after they had done so with the corner flags," he said.
"I don't really know what caused this. We were escorted to our hotel by the security and everybody in our team is okay."
Interestingly the same fixture last season also ended in controversy after Heartland claimed they were manhandled by their home fans after they managed a 1-1 draw in Kano.

Suarez facing big ban for biting opponent
"It is the FA's contention that the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient in these circumstances," the ruling body said. Suarez, who was banned seven matches for biting an opponent during a Dutch league game shortly before joining Liverpool in January 2011, wrestled with Ivanovic before sinking his teeth into the Serbian's arm during Sunday's 2-2 draw at Anfield.
Suarez has until Tuesday to respond to the charge -- if he doesn't then the hearing will take place Wednesday. British Prime Minister David Cameron said any punishment for Suarez needs to take into account his high profile and responsibility as a role model.
Canada Thwarts Al Qaeda Terror Plot Targeting U.S. Bound Train

“As I understand it, it was a train going from Canada to the U.S.,” Rep. Peter King, R-New York, chairman of the counterterrorism and intelligence subcommittee, said.
The news follows an announcement earlier in the day by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that they had arrested Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35.
The two men are charged with “receiving support from al Qaeda elements in Iran” to carry out an attack and conspiring to murder people on a VIA railway train in the greater Toronto area, Assistant Police Commissioner James Malizia said.
“When I speak about supported, I mean direction and guidance,” he said.
Despite the allegation of links to al Qaeda in Iran, there was no evidence to suggest the planned attacks were state-sponsored, Malizia said.
U.S. authorities say the plot involved detonating explosives on a train traveling from Toronto to Penn Station in New York.
Essenghaier, of Montreal, and Jaser, of Toronto, will make their first court appearance on Tuesday, police said.
“We are alleging these two individuals took steps and conducted activities to conduct a terrorist attack,” Jennifer Strachan of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told reporters.
“They watched trains and railways in the greater Toronto area.”
The alleged attack included a plan to derail a passenger train, she said.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation quoted “highly placed sources” as saying the suspects were under surveillance for more than a year.
The CBC reported that the investigation was “part of a cross-border operation involving Canadian law enforcement agencies, the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.”

TV anchor suspended: News anchor drops the F-Word on first newscast
A mere fifteen seconds into his first every broadcast, Clemente exclaimed:

Clemente was looking down and fiddling with his mic at the time he said it, but his co-anchor went straight into the news and continued on. Van Tieu, Clemente's co-anchor, went on and introduced her new co-anchor, but he may not be there for very long.
“You may have seen our newest reporter A.J. on North Dakota News, and he’ll be joining the weekend news team as my co-anchor,” she said.
Clemente was suspended by the station shortly after the broadcast aired on Sunday night, and then gave an apology to viewers on Facebook. The TV anchor, now suspended, on the other hand, took to Twitter with a simple message.
"That couldn't have gone any worse!" Clemente tweeted.

Brazil police sentenced to 156 years for 1992 Carandiru prison 'massacre'

The policemen, most of them now retired, were accused of killing 15 prisoners in Sao Paulo's Carandiru prison during the operation to quell the revolt on Oct 2, 1992, which came to be known as the "Carandiru massacre."
Survivors had described scenes of chaos, accusing police of firing on inmates who had already surrendered or were hiding in their cells. In addition to the 111 prisoners who were killed, another 87 were wounded.
No police were harmed in the operation, but the defence said they fired in self-defence after being threatened and assaulted by the prisoners. Three other policemen in the trial were cleared of wrongdoing.

Mobile-phone users in Nigeria will be able to change service providers and retain their numbers under new regulations from today, increasing competition between companies including MTN Group Ltd. (MTN) and Bharti Airtel Ltd. (BHARTI)
The new rules are among a series of measures introduced by the regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission, to help increase competition and deliver more benefits to consumers, Reuben Muoka, a spokesman for the NCC, said in a phone interview from Abuja, the capital, on April 19. Rates for calls between different phone companies were set 40 percent lower from April 1.

World's oldest man in Japan celebrates 116th birthday
Mr Kimura, born on 19 April 1897, is believed to be the last known man to have lived across three centuries. He worked as a postman until he was 65 years old before taking up farming until he was 90.
Guinness World Records has certified Mr Kimura as the world's oldest living person and the oldest living man.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in a video message to Mr Kimura that "it is absolutely amazing" to have his two records. The mayor of Kyotango City in western Japan where Mr Kimura lives also dropped by for a visit.
Mr Kimura currently lives at home under the care of his grandson's widow and eats his meals thrice a day. He has 14 grandchildren and dozens of great- and great-great grandchildren, reports say.
He is one of only 12 people in the world still alive who was born before the turn of the 20th century, says the BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo.
Japan is also home to the world's oldest living woman, Misao Okawa, who is 115 years old.

Son of Senegal's ex-president accused of amassing $1.3 billion fortune taken into custody
Karim Wade is believed to have amassed a personal fortune of more than $1.3 billion, and a special prosecutor has been investigating the possible embezzlement of state funds. Lawyer Cire Cledor Ly said that Wade was brought Monday to a police station where he was being interrogated.
His father, Abdoulaye Wade, left office last year after losing the presidential runoff election in a landslide.
Karim Wade has long been the subject of accusations of embezzlement, especially after his father appointed him to head a "super ministry," giving him control over the key sectors of the Senegalese economy.
His lawyer has said that his client is being unjustly accused.
Armed robber blasts out of prison with explosives in tissue packets
It isn't the first time Faid has gone on the lam. He was arrested in 1998 after three years on the run in Switzerland and Israel, according to French media.
Faid was freed after serving 10 years of his 31-year sentence and swore he had turned his life around, writing a confessional book about his life of crime and going on an extensive media tour.
"When I was on the run, I lived all the time with death, with fear of the police, fear of getting shot," he told Europe 1 radio at the time.
20-year-old Become Nigerian And South African Youngest Commercial Pilot
A 20-year-old Nigerian, Favour Odozor, has emerged as the youngest with the Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) in both Nigeria and South Africa.
Mr. Odozor who graduated alongside 15 other trained pilots at the Afrika Union Aviation Academy (AUAA), Mafikeng, South Africa on Saturday was described as the new hope of the African aviation industry. Capt. Allan Roebuck, Director of AUAA, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Johannesburg that Mr. Odozor completed all the 37 flying procedures in record time.
“The academy is proud of this young Nigerian, with the award of licence and certificate to him. Today, I can say he is the youngest commercial licence pilot in both Nigeria and South Africa. “I cannot say now if he is the youngest African to attain that record, but I’m sure he is the youngest in South Africa and Nigeria,’’ he said.
