Uhuru Kenyatta wins Kenyan Presidential elections with 50.03%

Kenya's election commission posted complete results early today showing that Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta prevailed in the country's presidential elections by the slimmest of margins, winning 50.03% of the vote.

That result is likely to bring controversy in Kenya and an almost certain legal challenge from Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Kenyatta needed to break the 50% barrier to avoid a run-off with Odinga, but he did so by only 4 099 votes out of more than 12.3 million cast.

Uhuru Kenyatta Maintains early Lead in Kenyan Presidential Vote

The latest results from Monday's Kenyan elections show Uhuru Kenyatta maintaining his lead in the race for president.

With about 40 percent of polling stations reporting Tuesday, Kenyatta led his main opponent, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, 53 percent to 41 percent.

Kenyatta, who is Kenya's deputy prime minister, had strong support in the areas north of the capital, Nairobi, while Odinga was winning in districts of western and southern Kenya.

Some 14 million Kenyans were eligible to vote in the elections for president, parliament, and other key offices.  Both Odinga and Kenyatta have promised to respect the result of the vote.
