Abdel Fattah El-Sisi wins Egypt's presidential election

Egypt's General Abdel Fattah El-Sisi cruised to a landslide victory in an election some claim was little more than political theatre. Low voter turnout could threaten his claims of public popularity and mandate to govern.

Abdul Fattah al-Sisi said he won 23.38 million votes, with left-wing politician Hamdeen Sabahi taking 735,285. Invalid votes were 1.07 million, or nearly 350,000 more than the number of votes for the 59-year-old Sabahi.

The victory by retired field marshal Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi was never in doubt, but the career infantry officer had pushed for a strong turnout to bestow legitimacy on his ouster last July of Egypt's first freely elected president, the Islamist Mohammed Morsi.

Cristiano Ronaldo wins 2013 Ballon d'Or

Cristiano Ronaldo ended the four-year dominance of Lionel Messi when he was awarded the 2013 FIFA Ballon d`Or in Zurich on Monday.

The tearful 28-year-old Real Madrid and Portugal star had been the overwhelming favourite to pip Barcelona and Argentina star Messi, winner the previous four years, and France`s Franck Ribery, who won the treble with Bayern Munich in 2013.

Ronaldo edged Lionel Messi (Barcelona/Argentina), who had won all three Ballon d'Or Awards since its merger with the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2009, and Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich/France) to win the marquee individual honor.

Lionel Messi says Cristiano Ronaldo is a worthy winner of the 2013 Fifa Ballon d'Or after he finished runner-up to the Portugal star at Monday's gala in Zurich.

Sule Egya Wins 2013 Commonwealth Book Prize For Africa

Nigerian academic Dr Sule Emmanuel Egya, who writes poetry and fiction under the pen name E.E Sule, has won this year’s Commonwealth Book Prize for Africa. His first novel, Sterile Sky, published by Pearson Education in the African Writers Series in 2012, was adjudged best by the Commonwealth Prize panel.

Dr Egya has taught at Nasarawa State University and the University of Abuja and is currently an associate professor of English at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai. Besides poems and short stories published in numerous anthologies, literary magazines and journals, he has published three poetry volumes namely What the Sea Told Me (winner of the 2009 ANA Gabriel Okara Prize), Unclad Sun, and Knifing Tongues.

Sterile Sky is a story of a gifted young Murtala who grew in Kano where violent riots exacerbated by his family’s own woes threaten to erase all he holds dear. Stalked by monsters, real and imagined, desperate to preserve a sense of self and the future, Murtala hunts for answers in the wreckage of the city and the book gives us a unique insight into modern life in northern Nigeria.

Soyinka Wins Lifetime Achievement of the Anisfield-Wolf Award

The 1986 Nobel Laureate in Literature, Professor Wole Soyinka on Monday in America, won the Lifetime Achievement award of the annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Award.

The other winners are Andrew Solomon for Far From The Tree (Non-Fiction), Eugene Gloria for My Favorite Warlord (Poetry), Kevin Powers for The Yellow Birds (Fiction) and Laird Hunt for Kind One (Fiction).

This was the 78th edition of the award organised by The Root and sponsored by the Cleveland Foundation. Past winners include Derek Walcott, Toni Morrison, Nadine Gordimer and Wole Soyinka before they won the Nobel Prize.

Every year since 1935, the Anisfield-Wolf Awards have been honouring books and authors that “have made important contributions to our understanding of racism and our appreciation of the rich diversity of human culture.”

Cleveland poet and philanthropist Edith Anisfield Wolf established the book prizes in honour of her father, John Anisfield and husband, Eugene Wolf, to reflect her family’s passion for issues of social justice.

'Greatest Ever' Messi wins fourth World Player of the Year crown

Argentina star Lionel Messi has cemented his status as the greatest player on the planet by becoming the first player to win FIFA's prestigious Ballon d'Or title on four separate occasions. The name of the world’s best football player was announced at a gala-show in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday night.

Unilag students wins Google Apps Developer Challenge

Three University of Lagos (UNILAG) students, have won the Google Apps Developer Challenge for the Enterprise/Small Business Solutions category in sub-Saharan Africa.

The students: Bolutife Ogunsola, Michael Adeyeri and Willie Aniebiet, created the Form+ application software; an interface that creates application forms by just dragging and dropping components.

The user can create forms - such as curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé submission forms for businesses and coursework submission page for lecturers.

Emeka Afigbo, Program Manager, Google, stated: "Our expectation is that this motivates more young Nigerian developers to develop apps that change the way we live in Nigeria and Africa at large."

The winners were rewarded with Chromebooks and $20,000.

They also won a grant worth $18,000 for their school's department.
