Badejo said, “I live in a one-storey building and there are four tenants occupying the ground floor. Around 4am, armed robbers stormed our house.“The robbers robbed all of us occupying the ground floor. They stole my clothes, money,phones and other valuables. While the robbery was ongoing, one of the tenants called Maroko Police Division.”Badejo said after the robbers had fled, scores of policemen arrived at the house while one of them started shooting indiscriminately, adding that he was hit five times.He said, “We (neighbours) were all inside the compound counting our losses when we heard a slam on the gate. Immediately the security guard opened, one of the policemen started shooting indiscriminately.

“The security guard was shot in the pelvis and in the back but the bullet pierced through his chest.I immediately took cover under a car but the policeman came to where I was and started shooting at me.

“Another policeman came behind me and shot.The first shot came through my feet and fractured my leg. Two shots grazed my thighs. Another shot went through my biceps and came out, while one went through my wrist.

Traffic Law: Motorcycle dealers complain of low patronage

Dealers in motorcycle spare parts in Lagos State have complained of low patronage, following the implementation of the new Traffic Law in the state.

Some of the dealers told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the restriction on the operation of commercial motorcyclists had affected their turnover.

The Traffic law, enacted on August 2, prohibits the operations of commercial motorcyclists on 475 highways and bridges  across the metropolis.

Governor Babatunde Fashola had said, while signing the law, that the restriction was to tackle growing cases of motorcycle related accidents.

One of the dealers in Agege, Mr Emeka Chibuzor, said that business was at its lowest ebb at the moment.

``Before the law was enacted, I used to sell between six and seven motorcycles in a week and on a good day when business is extremely good, I can sell up to 10.

``But nobody is buying anymore.

``Why would anybody buy when he cannot freely operate on all roads? I rely on miracles to sell these days. Business is really bad,’’ Chibuzor complained.

Another dealer at Ipaja road, who identified himself as Anthony, said that his turnover had gone down by more than 25 per cent.

According to him, the law had forced many `okada’ operators out of business.

He complained that the mass exodus of people from the okada operation has had serious impact on the sales of motorcycle spare parts.

``I am thinking of relocating to Ogun State or any other neighbouring state where they still operate.

``Business, for me, is over here in Lagos,’’ he said.

Tunde Akanbi, a motorcycle mechanic at Iyana Ipaja, said that he had been rendered idle as many of his customers have had their motorcycles impounded by the law enforcement agents.

Akanbi said that the lull in patronage might force him to return to his former trade of tailoring.

But for Rex Imeh, a motorcycle dealer in Oshodi, the new law has brought to him, a new business opportunity.

``Nothing is constant in life. The government has said it does not want something.

``The government gave reasons for its action and I think people should show some understanding.

``The law, for me, is another business opportunity. At present, I am  in talks with a businessman on how to get 200cc capacity bikes into the country from China.

“This type of motorcycle (200cc) is the recommended bike by the law for courier dispatch riders to ply highways and bridges.

``We do not have enough of these bikes in the country right now. This is a business opportunity,’’ he said.

Malaria vaccine gives disappointing results

A vast phase III clinical trial in Africa of the malaria vaccine candidate RTS,S/AS01 reported disappointing results this morning. The vaccine failed to show substantial protection in the key trial age group of infants who received their first shot between 6 and 12 weeks of age. The low protective effect of the vaccine was around half that reported last year in older children in the same study, and that of an earlier, smaller trial of babies of the same age group.

Work on the RTS,S vaccine began a quarter of a century ago within the US military, with development since 2001 being carried out by a public–private venture between the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI) – supported by US$200 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, Washington – and the London-based pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Eleven research centres in seven African countries are involved in organizing the phase III trial, which involves vaccinating and monitoring thousands of children.

Pastor Impregnates Member’s Wife

All is not well with Senior Pastor of the God’s Victory Mission in Mbaitoli, Imo State, Pastor John Ohih as LEADERSHIP gathered that he allegedly impregnated the wife of a member of his church.

A reliable source who disclosed this to LEADERSHIP in Owerri also alleged that the Pastor has been in the habit of having carnal knowledge of his flocks before his present ordeal.

According to the source, the woman who he impregnated is in her early 30s with six children for her husband.

The source further revealed that the woman whose identity was not disclosed at the time of filling this report got in contact with the Pastor when her mother in-law was ill and somebody recommended the man of God to her.

After the healing exercise, stressed the source, the home and church of the Pastor became a regular abode of the woman who we later gathered got pregnant for the cleric.

Her husband, our source further revealed has vowed to action against the man of God.

What seemed to have infuriated the husband as the source hinted further was the fact that his wife was still nursing an 18 months old baby before she was impregnated by the Pastor.

The woman has since fled her husband’s home, abandoning her 18 months old baby.

Hope Harriman dies at 79

One of Nigeria’s foremost businessmen, Chief Hope Harriman, is dead.

He died in the United States on Wednesday. He was 79.

His daughter,Temi, said the late business mogul was not really ill before his death.

He was said to have travelled to Washington from Europe and was taking notes on the just-concluded US election.

According to her, plans were on for his 80th birthday in January.

His wife, Roli, a judge, was by his bedside.

The late philanthropist was born in Warri, Delta State. He was a prominent Itsekiri leader, who played a major role in settling the Ijaw and Itsekiri crisis.

The man picked her up in a Range rover car and drove to upmarket westlands for a drink. She decided to have red bull since that was their first time of meeting and didn't want to leave a bad impression.

During their date, she excused herself and went to the loo, that was when the man drugged the red bull she was drinking.

The girl only remembers being drowsy and someone dragging her to the car. She was half awake but still weak when the man together with other assailants raped her repeatedly. She lost count of the number of times she was raped.

She only came back to her senses when good samaritans found her in Umoja 2, Kenya in a very bad state.

The girl said her vagina was sore and couldn't walk properly.

She warns females to be very careful about the male friends they meet on Facebook as not all of them have good intentions.

Device diagnoses cancer in 20 minutes

BRITISH scientists have developed a groundbreaking device that can diagnose cancer in just 20 minutes. The world’s first tumour profiler, as it is known, will allow doctors, nurses and pharmacists to quickly identify all known types of cancer while the patient waits.

The device has been invented as part of a partnership between private firm QuantuMDx, Newcastle University and Sheffield University. Scientists say the Q-Cancer device will have a dramatic impact on the rapid and accurate diagnosis of cancer.

Company officials said the device has the potential to prolong the lives of the 12 million newly diagnosed cancer sufferers around the world. It will enable surgeons to immediately remove most, if not all of the tumour, and allow cancer specialists to prescribe the correct treatment regime according to the type of cancer developed.

Shopping mall in Ghana collapses killing one

A five-story shopping center built earlier this year in a bustling suburb of Accra, Ghana’s capital, collapsed Wednesday, killing at least one person and leaving several dozen people trapped in the rubble, the authorities and eyewitnesses said. Rescue crews used cranes to try to remove debris from the top of the building amid fears that machinery digging through the wreckage could injure trapped survivors. A Greater Accra Regional Public Affairs officer, Freeman Tettey, confirmed that one person died and that 51 had been rescued and sent to hospitals around the capital.

Microsoft Nigeria has unveiled Windows 8 to its customers and partners in Nigeria at its Open Door event following the global launch of the product last October.

The Microsoft’s Open Door events serve to address the demand for space in which African technology professionals are able to experience the latest-generation technologies first-hand, exchange ideas, build skills, and network with their local IT community and Microsoft technology experts.

Windows 8 was the main product exhibited at this years' Open Door Event targeted at IT professionals, developer and partners.

Speaking at the press conference to announce the launch, Country Manager, Microsoft Anglophone West Africa, Mr. Emmanuel Onyeje, stated that with the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft is unveiling a reimagined Windows to the world.

Onyeje said: “To enrich the reinvented Windows experience, local consumers and businesses will be able to experience all that Windows 8 has to offer; as well-known manufacturers have released a wide-range of notebooks, tablets, all-in-ones, touch-enabled ultra-books, and convertibles, all designed for Windows 8.”

He explained that the product was suitable for any tablet or a PC, and said: “Whether you want to consume or create, work or play, Windows 8 delivers a personalised experience that fits your unique style and needs.”

He added that Windows 8 would have two available retail versions: Windows 8 designed for home users and Windows 8 Pro geared for business and proffesional users.
“It offers new possibilities in mobile productivity with features like Windows To Go, DirectAccess, and BranchCache, as well as enhanced end-to-end security with features including BitLocker and AppLocker,” he said.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager, Ha-Shem Network Service Limited, Mr. Olaide Akisanya, said: “Windows 8 is an excellent product, which empowers our customers work force by enhancing their business productivity, makes them work smarter and better. They can view the world at their palm once they have installed on their devices. It gives customers an eagle eye view of the world.”

Also launched at the Open Door Event is a new member of the Windows family designed for ARM-based tablets, Windows RT, which will be pre-installed on new devices.

In addition to the range of new devices available, consumers can also upgrade their existing PCs. Through the end of January, consumers currently running PCs with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, are qualified to download Windows 8 Pro for an estimated retail price of $40, while eligible Windows 7 PCs purchased between June 2, 2012, and January 31, 2013 in more than 140 countries can download Windows 8 Pro for an estimated retail price of $15.

US Election becomes most twitted topic in Twitter History!

This year's Presidential election is officially the most-tweeted subject in the history of Twitter (which is all of about 6 years).  At 300 thousand tweets per minute, the twitterverse couldn't shut up about Obama, Romney, and the fate of next four years.  So what's the next hot topic that could top the tweeting record of the 2012 election?

THE GAME: I'm Paying Voters to Vote.

Rapper The Game isn't letting New Yorkers use Hurricane Sandy as an excuse not to vote today, he's already shelled out $10,000 to 500 voters stranded by the storm ... in order to help them make it to the polls.

Game tells us, the money was intended to help voters who were hit hard by last week's disaster to pay for gas or another form of transportation in order to cast their ballot.

And get this -- Game says he's so committed to the cause ... he even helped shuttle people to the polls in his own car.

By the way, Game ... who lives in LA, says he voted by absentee ballot -- and claims he's not doing this to influence people to vote for President Obama. 

SIna Kawonuse shot by unknown gunmen

Unknown gunmen yesterday  shot the Managing Director  of Nigerian Compass, Mr. Sina Kawonise and his police orderly.

Kawonise who was Commissioner of Information during ex-Governor Gbenga Daniel’s tenure, was reportedly attacked by the gunmen around Ikeji Arakeji in Osun State  on his way back from Awka, Anambra State.

According to a statement by media aide to Daniel, Adegbenro Adebanjo, the gunmen  opened fire in order to force his vehicle to stop.

“The attackers were, however,  repelled by his two police orderlies. In the ensuing gun battle  Mr. Kawonise  was shot in the leg by the attackers while one of the two policemen also suffered gunshot wounds.

“The armed attackers later fled the scene while Mr. Kawonise and the wounded policeman were evacuated to a nearby hospital. Doctors treating the duo said they were stabilizing.

Obama make History again

Barack Obama’s re-election for another term in the White House opens a new chapter in the already historic tale of the first black president of a nation scarred at birth by a deep racial fault line.

But for Obama partisans his re-election was essential. Only with a full eight years at the helm of the US presidency will he be remembered for the change he wrought and not just for the change he represented.

Though it was key to the euphoria that greeted his first election in 2008, Obama’s race has rarely been a dominant political theme since.

Quickly, the same political dynamics faced by many of his predecessors: divided, vicious, partisan politics threatened to swamp the 44th US president.

All presidents crave the validation of a second term but for Obama that desire may have been even more keen, as his Republican foe Mitt Romney had vowed to quickly reverse much of his legacy.

Obama’s whole political project, the idea that America is not as divided as it seems, that a grass roots movement can change a nation from the bottom up, and that hope has tangible political power, was on the line.

“Our destiny is not written for us; it’s written by us,” Obama told a crowd at a recent New Hampshire rally, seeking to revive the sense of possibility that powered his first election win, but has since dissolved.

UNILAG student falls victim of Facebook violence

A 21-year-old student has been hospitalised, after she was allegedly pushed down from the third floor of a building in  Lagos, following a disagreement with a man she met on the social network, Facebook.

She allegedly met a 26-year-old man (name withheld) a week earlier and last Wednesday, he invited her to a night club in Apapa from where they ended up in his family home at 1004 Estate, Victoria Island, Lagos. 

Nkiruka said on getting to the house, the man tore her dress and tried to rape her. 

She noted that the young man had earlier talked about sex on the phone prior to the outing but she told him she was menstruating.

According to Nkiruka, the man thereafter pushed her down from the third floor of the building because she refused to have sex with him. 

When contacted, the man’s mother, who was at home on the night of the incident, however said she was not aware of what happened. 

She said she slept around 10pm, while the disagreement between the couple started much later.

The mother, who pleaded anonymity, said she paid part of the hospital bill immediately after Nkiruka was admitted, and even tried to transfer her to a private hospital.

“I took her as our own daughter and so, I can do anything that will make her recover quickly,’’ she added.

She insisted that her preliminary inquiry indicated that Nkiruka was not pushed by her son as alleged, but that she jumped on her own in the ensuing scuffle.

When the Divisional Police Officer of Bar Beach, Victoria Island, Lagos, Mr. Fayoade Adegoke was contacted, he said that Nkiruka wrote in her statement that she jumped on her own, in order to escape being raped. 

Adegoke said he ordered his men to convey the victim to the hospital immediately after he was informed of the incident by security guards in the area. 

The DPO said the suspect was released on bail, pending further investigation into the matter.

Three arrested for lynching suspected robbers in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three suspects for allegedly taking part in the lynching of five suspected armed robbers in Mushin Area of the state on Saturday. Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Ngozi Braide, said on Tuesday that the suspects were arrested as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.

She  said, “A full  investigation has commenced into the incident, I cannot give details about the involvement of the arrested suspects for now.

“We have also invited the community leaders of the area where the incident took place. The police will surely get to the root of the matter.”

Braide, however, declined to give the names of the arrested men.

Impulse had the highest number of votes while Bariyu and Lil P had a tie, and then it was the judges’ task to pick the act that will make it to the final stage. Yibo went for Lil P, while Dan and Kate went for Bariyu.
