Twist in Oscar Pistorius trial as state wants psychiatric test

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel wants the South African track star sent for independent psychiatric evaluation, he said Monday, in a move that could delay the athlete's murder trial for a month or more.

A psychiatrist testified Monday that Pistorius has an anxiety disorder stemming from his double amputation as an infant and his unstable parents. He's depressed now and feeling guilt from having killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, defense witness Dr. Meryl Vorster said on the stand.

DSS Arrests Perpetrators Of April 14 Nyanya Bombing

The Department of State Service, DSS, has arrested five men for the April 14 bombing of Nyanya Park in Abuja, Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory.

The DSS has also declared wanted one Rufai Abubakar Tsiga and Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche for allegedly masterminding the bombing.

Dusk To Dawn Curfew As Church, Mosques Burnt In Southern Kaduna

A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed following the burning of a church, and at least two mosques, including some buildings today in Southern Kaduna by armed Christian and Muslim followers. The skirmishes occurred in the military town of Kachia that houses both the Nigerian Navy and Army institutions, military personnel confirmed the occurrence of the attacks to SaharaReporters.

The source, speaking to us on the condition of anonymity, said angry Muslims had attacked a church after their own praying ground was torched by Christians in the area. The military source also said the Nigerian military, and police officials, have both taken over the town as a dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed by the Kaduna State government in view of a possible escalation.

The mood in Kachia on Sunday evening following both events is “tense,” say our sources. The police authorities in the state are yet to make an official public announcement of their on-the-ground observations on the unfolding events of recent hours.  On the issue of casualties, possible fatalities, and details of property damage to the other buildings inside Kachia are not yet known.  

Police officials have also not yet released any information following the series of attacks, nor what caused the inflamed religious confrontations in Kachia.  

IRS Airline crashes in Niger Republic

A Fokker 100 belonging to IRS airlines crashed in Niger Republic on Saturday evening. The aircraft with registration number 5NSIK, which was returning from a C CHECK crashed at about 7.30pm.

However, no life was lost as the two crew members who were on board survived. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the crash.

Nigeria refused immediate assistance from international community to search for kidnapped girls

The president of Nigeria for weeks refused international help to search for more than 300 girls abducted from a school by Islamic extremists, one in a series of missteps that have led to growing international outrage against the government.

The United Kingdom, Nigeria's former colonizer, first said it was ready to help in a news release the day after the mass abduction on April 15, and made a formal offer of assistance on April 18, according to the British Foreign Office. And the U.S. has said its embassy and staff agencies offered help and were in touch with Nigeria "from day one" of the crisis, according to Secretary of State John Kerry.

Yet it was only on Tuesday and Wednesday, almost a month later, that President Goodluck Jonathan accepted help from the United States, Britain, France and China.

The delay underlines what has been a major problem in the attempt to find the girls: an apparent lack of urgency on the part of the government and military, for reasons that include a reluctance to bring in outsiders as well as possible infiltration by the extremists.

Jonathan bristled last week when he said U.S. President Barack Obama, in a telephone conversation about aid, had brought up alleged human rights abuses by Nigerian security forces. Jonathan also acknowledged that his government might be penetrated by insurgents from Boko Haram, the extremist group that kidnapped the girls. Last year, he said he suspected Boko Haram terrorists might be in the executive, legislative and judiciary arms of government along with the police and armed forces.

Janitor awarded over $76,000 for finding money in office bathroom

A ruling by an Australian magistrate has awarded former janitor and current fast food worker/student, Chamindu Amarsinghe over US$76,000 nearly three years after he found a huge amount of money in a sanitary bin in an office bathroom he was cleaning. Amarsinghe said that he was speechless when he received the news. The Herald Sun reported that since it was discovered in August 2011, no one came forth to claim the money. The remainder of the more than US$93,500 discovered will go to the state.

Apple hires Partinen, man behind the best camera phones in the world

Apple has just hired former senior Nokia Lumia engineer Ari Partinen, whom Nokia has in the past described as its “own camera expert.”

One of Partinen’s biggest achievements during his time at Nokia was working on the PureView technology that the company debuted in 2012 and that has helped Nokia smartphone cameras deliver best-in-the-industry low-light photography, so it seems that future iPhone cameras stand to get a big boost when it comes to snapping pictures in the dark.

Michelle Obama to speak about Nigeria's abducted girls during weekly presidential address

First Lady Michelle Obama is to speak out against the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls by Islamic militants when she gives the weekly presidential address instead of her husband, the White House said Friday.

White House deputy spokesman Eric Schultz said Michelle Obama would focus on the issue of the mass abductions in an address on Saturday to mark Mother's Day, which falls on Sunday in the United States.

"As the mother of two young daughters, Mrs Obama is taking up the opportunity to express outrage and heartbreak the President and she share over the kidnapping of over 200 Nigerian girls of their school," Schultz told reporters aboard Air Force One.

"The First Lady hopes that the courage of these young girls serves as an inspiration ... and a call to action for people around the world to fight to ensure that every girl receives the education that is their birthright."

NYSC Call Up letter to be collected Online

The exercise is aimed at alleviating prospective corps’ members from traveling from their states of domicile after graduation to their schools in order to collect the call-up letters.

Director-General, DG, of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, gave the hint yesterday, during the pre-mobilisation seminar in preparation for 2014 Batch B in Enugu.

Oluwumi said: “It is for automation for mobilisation process for NYSC. The mobilisation process will be done through automation that a graduate from a school in Sokoto, for example, would not have to go to Sokoto to collect his call-up letter. All that will be done online.”

Samsung’s Head Of Mobile Design Resigns After Galaxy S5′s failure

Samsung Electronic’s head of mobile design, Chang Dong-hoon, has resigned following criticism about the Galaxy S5 smartphone’s lack of pulchritude.Though the Galaxy S5′s design did not actually deviate too far from earlier models, its looks and textured plastic back were roundly lambasted by reviewers.

Despite their perceived lack of beauty, Samsung still managed to sell 86 million smartphones in 4Q2013, widening its lead over Apple. During that quarter, it also attained a 29.6% share of the global smartphone market, compared to Apple’s 17.6%.

But Samsung has been struggling to make a profit with its phones, thanks in part to heavy spending on marketing. In April, it also reduced the price of the Galaxy S5 in South Korea, the first time it has ever done so for a flagship phone.

Samsung said Chang will be replaced by Lee Min-hyouk, Samsung’s vice president for mobile design. Chang, who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, offered to leave the company last week, but will continue to oversee Samsung’s overall design strategy.
