A statement on his Facebook page said Walker, 40, had been a passenger in a friend's car who appeared to have lost control of the Porsche GT and crashed into a lamp pole north of Los Angeles. This is contrary to reports by TMZ that the actor was reported to have died after "his" Porsche crashed and exploded.
"We... are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news,'' the statement on Walker's Facebook page said.
A statement from Universal Pictures said: "All of us at Universal are heartbroken.
"Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the Fast and Furious films, and to countless fans.
"We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul's family."
Walker was most recently seen in "Fast and Furious 6" and was in production on "Fast and Furious 7."
