2 policemen, another killed as robbers attack bank in Oyo

Exchange of gunshots between the police and some dare-devil armed robbers yesterday at Iseyin, Oyo State led to the death of three persons including two traffic wardens.

The robbers numbering 25 were said to have attacked  some commercial banks in the sleepy town around 9.30a.m. but were confronted by policemen.

Among the injured in the 45-minute operation was a mechanic who was said to have been hit by stray bullets.
The policemen were said to have fought the robbers to a standstill.

At the end, a robber was killed, while another one was arrested with bullet wounds.
The robbers were said to have besieged the town shooting sporadically to scare people away.
The hoodlums, before gaining entry were said to have used explosives to force the security doors open.

After this, it was gathered that customers and staff of the first generation bank were held hostage. The two traffic wardens allegedly killed  were said to be on duty at a nearby junction.
After successfully robbing the first bank, the robbers  were reportedly heading to another when the policemen confronted  them.

The police team from the area command also got one of the two vehicles used by the rampaging robbers.

Expectedly, commercial and vehicular activities were temporarily suspended as people ran for dear lives.

The robbers who escaped were said to have made away with  undisclosed amount of money from the bank.

A policeman from the state command confirmed the robbery incident but quickly added that two robbers were killed and not traffic wardens as claimed by some eye witnesses.
