'This isn't a course about Beyoncé's political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama's inauguration weekend,' he told the University paper.

'Rather, the performer's music and career are used as lenses to explore American race, gender, and sexual politics.'

He added: 'It's important to shift students away from simply being consumers of media toward thinking more critically about what they're engaging in on a regular basis.'

Australian Open 2014: Nadal beats Federer to reach final

Rafael Nadal powered past Roger Federer to reach the Australian Open final and maintain his dominance over the 17-time Grand Slam champion.

The world number one came through 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-3 and goes on to face Federer's compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka, for the title on Sunday.

And the Spaniard, 27, will be a strong favourite to claim his 14th Slam, and become only the third man to win all four majors at least twice.

Juan Mata's £37million transfer to Manchester United accepted by Chelsea

Juan Mata is poised to be unveiled as Manchester United's club record signing by the weekend after Chelsea agreed to sell the Spanish playmaker.

Mata was significantly absent from training at Chelsea's Cobham base this morning as the rest of Jose Mourinho's squad began preparations for Sunday's FA Cup clash with Stoke. 

Chelsea have accepted a £37million bid for Juan Mata and immediately released the Spanish international to join Manchester United to complete the most dramatic deal of the transfer window.

Mata will undergo a medical on Thursday at United before completing the move that will see him more than double his £70,000-a-week Chelsea salary at Old Trafford.
Chelsea have been braced for a bid since Monday for Mata and finally received the offer triggering their acceptance and the release of the player.

12 Year Old Ejigbo Victim Advocates Death Penalty For Perpetrators

Nike, a 12 year old girl who was one of the three victims of suspected OPC members who tortured 3 pepper sellers in Ejigbo, Lagos state, for allegedly stealing pepper worth 50 naira, has advocated death penalty for the suspects for causing her step-sister’s death.

Nike, who was the third and youngest of the victims, appeared at the public hearing ordered by the Lagos State House of Assembly to investigate the incident which occurred in February 2012.

At the hearing, she identified three men as the ones who tortured herself and her step sister for stealing pepper worth 50 Naira.

She further revealed that one of the suspects (who was without a shirt in the viral video) had promised to set a trap for her because she rejected his advances.

She identified the man who wore jeans as ‘Tirin,’ the man who wore native attire called ‘ankara’ as Jibola, the third man, ‘Abolore’ and ‘Baba Oja.’

She also said that she witnessed the murder of a certain individual by the said men at the same location where they tortured her family members.

Nike, who was unaware of her sister’s death as a result of the severe injuries sustained, was asked what penalty she wanted for the criminals and she said “the people that kill somebody, they use to kill them.”

At the hearing, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,  Adeyemi Kuforiji, redeemed the 1 million Naira promise made by the ad-hoc Chairman to the family who helped in locating the victims. Part of the money was given to the victims.

The case has been handed over to the Office of the Public Defender.

The police in Benin have arrested and paraded a 33-year paedophile, Justine Olise, who allegedly raped five boys aged between 10 and 15, blaming his girlfriend who left him and broke his heart for the act.

Olise was paraded at the Edo Police Command Headquarters in Benin City.

He said he lured the victims into his room at  20, Evbodaghe street, Eyean in Benin City before carrying out the act.

“I don’t know what came over me. It all started when my girlfriend left me and broke my heart, so I wanted to stay away from all women,” Olise confessed.

Central African Republic gets first woman president

The mayor of the Central African Republic's capital Bangui was chosen as interim president Monday, becoming the first woman to lead the violence-wracked country, as the European Union agreed to send hundreds of troops to help stem the bloodshed.

Catherine Samba-Panza, a businesswoman with a reputation as a fighter who became Bangui mayor last year, was elected in a second-round vote by the transitional parliament. She now faces the enormous task of restoring peace to the chronically unstable country.

Cheers broke out in the assembly as the result was announced, with lawmakers singing the national anthem in celebration.

Nigerian Pastor Arrested For Alleged Fake Currency Printing

The Kogi State Command of the department of State Security Service as arrested a clergyman, Reverend Godson Akubuiro, his children and his 15 man syndicate for printing and circulation of fake Naira notes

The state Director Security Service (SSS) Mr Mike Fubara told journalists that the major breakthrough came as a result of painstaking investigation for over four months which took the operatives of SSS to Ikorodu in Lagos where they were all arrested.

Fake currency printers and distributors used by the suspects were seized by the SSS.

He told journalist that the prime suspect reverend Godson Akubuiro who is the general overseer of the Mountain of Breakthrough Deliverance Ministry also known as land of solution located at plot 7 Mountain of Breakthrough Avenue Koya Estate, Igbo Olomu, Agric, Ikorodu Lagos had been into printing and circulating of fake Naira notes.

Russian President Putin defends anti-gay law

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered new assurances to gay athletes and fans attending the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics next month. Yet he defended Russia's anti-gay law by equating gays with pedophiles and said Russia needs to "cleanse" itself of homosexuality if it wants to increase its birth rate.

Putin's comments in an interview broadcast Sunday with Russian and foreign television stations showed the wide gulf between the perception of homosexuality in Russia versus the West.

A Russian law passed last year banning "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" among minors has caused an international outcry.

Putin refused to answer a question from the BBC on whether he believes that people are born gay or become gay. The Russian law, however, suggests that information about homosexuality can influence a child's sexual orientation.

The law has contributed to growing animosity toward gays in Russian society, with rights activists reporting a rise in harassment and abuse.

International worries about how gays will be treated in Sochi have been met with assurances from Russian officials and Olympics organizers that there will be no discrimination in Sochi, and Putin reiterated that stance.

Ana Ivanovic dumps Serena Williams from Australian Open in the fourth round

Serbia's Ana Ivanovic stunned world number one Serena Williams at the Australian Open on Sunday with a 4-6 6-3 6-3 fourth-round upset at Rod Laver Arena.

Ivanovic ended the American's 25-match winning streak to reach her first grand slam quarter-final since the 2012 U.S. Open with an inspired display of clean hitting.

"It's amazing. I just tried to play the best I could," a thrilled Ivanovic said in a courtside interview.

"You guys have been amazing. I'm so thrilled," she told the crowd.

Ivanovic, a former world number one, had never taken a set off Williams in their four previous encounters.

A winner at Roland Garros at 2008, she was aggressive from the outset, breaking Williams at 2-2 in each of the first two sets and holding firm in the second to draw level.

A shell-shocked Williams was then broken at 1-0 in the deciding set when the Serbian laced a brilliant return down the line.

With the Rod Laver Arena crowd roaring their support for the underdog, Ivanovic coolly raised three match points and sealed the tournament's biggest upset when Williams missed a return.

BBC World TV's Komla Dumor dies at 41

Ghana-born Dumor was a presenter for BBC World News and its Focus on Africa programme. One of Ghana's best-known journalists, he joined the BBC as a radio broadcaster in 2007 after a decade of journalism in Ghana. 

BBC Global News Director Peter Horrocks called Dumor a leading light of African journalism who would be deeply missed. "Komla's many friends and colleagues across Africa and the world will be as devastated as we are by this shocking news," Mr Horrocks said in a statement. "The sympathies of all his colleagues at the BBC are with his family and friends." 

Komla Dumor was born on 3 October 1972 in Accra, Ghana. He graduated with a BA in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Ghana, and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. 

After a decade of broadcast journalism in his native country, where he won the Ghana Journalist of the Year award in 2003, he joined the BBC in 2007. From then until 2009 he hosted Network Africa for BBC World Service radio, before joining The World Today programme. 

In 2009 Komla Dumor became the first host of Africa Business Report on BBC World News.

Following a landmark endorsement by the United Nations, Generational Voices (GenVoices), the project-driven platform to harness the offline and online energy of young Nigerians for practical efforts towards nation building, has unveiled other details for the historic 100,000 Voices Telethon to be hosted by host station, Channels Television from 10am - 1pm on Saturday, 18 January.

"We are excited to announce that Africa's first Global Black Entertainment Network, EbonyLife TV will be airing the broadcast live as well, working through Channels Television," said Naomi Lucas, who is Project Manager. "They will be joined by the preferred station for young people in Nigeria, Beat FM, which will also be broadcasting the event live."

Nigerian Idol Season 4 Coming Soon

The world’s number one singing competition, which debuted across Nigeria in 2010, has seen three successful editions with each season being better than the last.

After an electrifying third season that produced Moses Adigwe, the first male winner in the history of the talent hunt in Nigeria, the fourth season will kick off this January with auditions to hold in five cities across Nigeria including Lagos, Benin, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Makurdi.

Following the tradition of the show, Nigerian Idol will last for five months and will feature tough drills, surprise evictions, grueling rehearsals resulting to stellar performances.

The show airs from February 2014 and will close with the announcement of Nigerian winner at a grand gala in June 2014.

Man Receives 20 Lashes Over Homosexual Offences

An Islamic Court sitting in Bauchi on Thursday found Mr Mubarak Ibrahim guilty of committing homosexual offences and ordered that he receives 20 lashes.

The court however tempered justice with mercy as Mr Ibrahim was given 20 lashes. Under Islamic law, courts can punish homosexual acts by stoning to death. The judge said he took into account that the Muslim man, Mubarak Ibrahim, 20, carried out the acts seven years ago, and had stopped the practice.

To all the Gays and Lesbians in Nigeria, keep your head up. You are being driven away from your country. Canada and any EU country will take you on Asylum status. You are not wanted in Nigeria. You will be jailed 14 years and I your supporter 10 years. Go to a country that can use your expertise and where u can live in peace and contribute to that country’s quota and be safe. As time goes on, change your citizenship.

Nigeria does not want you or love you. Our government says it’s not OK to be yourselves. They train our ppl and children to be fake. They attribute homosexuality to the bible yet they have broken every single 10 commandment. Many people will end up killing you via vigilante justice one day like in Uganda.

Everyone in your camp seems obsessed with the fact that the world is against you. One adviser recently accused everyone criticising you of lacking home training. Another, who made his name writing brilliant articles that skewered the governments of the day, recently lamented — without any sense of irony — that all Nigerian media is in the hands of the opposition.

Cristiano Ronaldo wins 2013 Ballon d'Or

Cristiano Ronaldo ended the four-year dominance of Lionel Messi when he was awarded the 2013 FIFA Ballon d`Or in Zurich on Monday.

The tearful 28-year-old Real Madrid and Portugal star had been the overwhelming favourite to pip Barcelona and Argentina star Messi, winner the previous four years, and France`s Franck Ribery, who won the treble with Bayern Munich in 2013.

Ronaldo edged Lionel Messi (Barcelona/Argentina), who had won all three Ballon d'Or Awards since its merger with the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2009, and Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich/France) to win the marquee individual honor.
