UNILORIN expels five students for alleged acts of misconduct

The University of Ilorin has expelled five students from the institution for alleged acts of misconduct.

The Disciplinary Committee of the institution said after due consideration of all evidence before it, it was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the allegation of misconduct was established against the students.

Vice-Chancellor, UNILORIN, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, in an interview with journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, confirmed the expulsion of the students.

He added that before any student could graduate, such must have been found worthy in learning and character.

According to him, students are being monitored from their first day on the campus till the last day. Besides, he said the university believed in upholding the rule of law.

He said, “We have various committees put in place to checkmate excesses either of the students or of the staff. We have rules and regulations guiding the conducts of staff and students on campus.”

Ita Bassey-Eno in critical condition

Doctors at the General Hospital, Gbagada, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, are seriously battling to save the life of an 11-year old girl, Ita Bassey-Eno, who was allegedly set ablaze by the woman she lives with, Mrs Nkese Iroakazi, a nurse at a hospital in Surulere.

Iroakazi was alleged to have poured kerosene on Bassey-Eno before lighting a match stick to set her ablaze after the girl was said to have stolen a piece of meat from the pot.

Witnesses said the girl ran out of their apartment at  7, Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere, unto to the main road with fire all over her body as she cried for help from passers-by to rescue her.

25+ Killed In Multiple Bomb Blasts at Sabon Gari, Kano

The Sabon Gari area of Kano metropolis was yesterday rocked by multiple bomb blasts which occurred at Igbo Road/Enugu Road and on New Road, opposite Ado Bayero Square killing no fewer than 25 persons.  were believed to have been killed in Sabon Gari area of Kano on Monday as suspected terrorists detonated about four bombs in the neighbourhood.It was learnt that one of the explosions, .

The blasts which occurred on Igbo Road, Enugu Road and New Road, opposite Ado Bayero Square is believed to have been carried out by Islamic sect, Boko Haram, occurred at a drinking joint in Sabon Gari, where most of the non-indigenes reside. The first blast was said to have occurred at about 9.12pm.

There had been at least two explosions one at about 9.12pm near International Hotel, while the second blast followed three minutes later. Security forces immediately condoned off both sites, which prevented people from moving closer to the places hit by the explosions.

AFP reports that “at least four explosions” had occurred in the Sabon Gari neighbourhood on Monday. “There is confusion all over the place. There were four huge explosions, so huge that they shook the whole area. Everywhere is enveloped in smoke and dust,” Chinyere Madu, a fruit vendor, told AFP.

Kola Oyebanji, a resident of the neighbourhood, believed “beer parlours” were the target. He said, “My house is not far from there. All my windows are shattered.” The cause of the blasts was not immediately clear. The spokesman for the Joint Task Force, Captain Ikedichi Iweh, confirmed the explosions but refused to give details. Boko Haram had claimed responsibility for coordinated suicide blasts at a bus park in Sabon Gari in March that killed over 22 people.

Swiss media reported that at least 33 people were injured, a number of them seriously.

Pope Francis departed from his predecessors' remarks on gay people, telling reporters today that he was not in a position to judge people based on their sexuality.

"If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?" Francis asked reporters aboard a plane returning to Italy following his first trip abroad as pope to Brazil.

The remarks caused a stir with some gay Catholics wondering if the newly elected pope, a Jesuit who made a career ministering to the poor and marginalized, was signalling a shift in Church doctrine.

Boko-Haram Kills 20 Civilians In Borno on Saturday

Suspected Boko Haram members at the weekend shot dead more than 20 civilians in northern Borno State, a military spokesman said yesterday.

“The suspected sect members came armed and fired sporadic shots that killed over 20 innocent civilians,” Lt. Haruna Mohammed Sani, spokesman for the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) said.

The violence took place on Saturday in Dawashe village, the army lieutenant said in a statement.

Breaking News: Tanzania's Nando Disqualified, Elikem gets a Strike

Tanzania's Nando has been Disqualified from the Big Brother House.

After yesterday's Evictions that saw Annabel and Sulu being given the boot, Big Brother then gathered all of the Housemates in the living room.

Big Brother reproached Nando for the fight that he had with Elikem on Friday. The heated face-off with Elikem saw the two fellas exchanging fiery words between them. Nando is the one that instigated the fight. Instigation and provocation is a violation of the Big Brother rules.

"Any Housemate who becomes physically violent will be removed from the House immediately. Violence can refer to self-inflicted violence, or violence towards another. Violence includes provocation, goading, bullying and victimisation," said Biggie.

This season Big Brother has imposed a Three Strike Rule, which will be applicable to Housemates who commit serious infringements. For this fight Nando received his second Strike and Elikem was served with his first Strike. Afterwards the Tanzanian was called into the Diary Room. He was given his third Strike for making threats against Elikem's life, saying: "I feel like stabbing him. A nigga like that deserves to die".

And he was also caught sleeping with scissors under his bed and this is not the first time that he has been caught with a weapon in the House. The troubled young fellow has had a dramatic nine weeks in The Chase. Last month he was served with a a Strike and a stern warning from Big Brother after he was found carrying a knife to the Channel O Party. The possession of weapons or intention to be violent in the House is another violation of the Big Brother rules.

After the Diary session Nando was told to immediately exit the House. Big Brother then gave a warning to the Housemates to conduct themselves as adults.

Lagos State government To Seal Buildings that Indiscriminately Hang Washed Clothes

The Lagos State government has threatened To Seal Buildings that Indiscriminately Hang Washed Clothes and this was made known by Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tunji Bello after monitoring the monthly sanitation exercise in Egbe-Idimu area of the state.

According to Bello, He said spreading of washed clothes on fences and frontage of buildings was becoming the norm in some parts of the state and the practice constitutes a nuisance to the environment.

“We are telling residents who wash and spread clothes on the streets, major highways and other places outside their homes to desist from the practice as it constitutes a great environmental nuisance.

“This is not good for our people and our state. We have directed the officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) to pack those clothes as refuse wherever they see them.

“We will not hesitate to seal up buildings or houses outside of which compounds residents hang their clothes indiscriminately,“ Bello said.
He also urged the residents to create spaces within the confines of their homes to spread their clothes rather than doing so in places “not friendly to the environment.’’

28 Soldiers Arrested In Lagos

The Military Police on Thursday said it arrested 28 wandering soldiers in the streets of Lagos.
Maj. Oyegoke Badamosi, spokesman for the 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ikeja Cantonment, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Badamosi said the soldiers were arrested by the military police attached to “Operation Checkmate”,  to curb misconduct and unauthorised movement of personnel in the city.
He added that the operation was aimed at checkmating soldiers who go about without staying at their duty posts.
He, however, said those arrested had been released after confirmation from their offices that they were genuine personnel.
Badamosi said that the operation would be a daily routine and would be extended to other parts of the state to enable the military authority to continue to enforce armed forces rules on erring personnel.
An eye-witness, who simply gave his name as Moses, told NAN that the soldiers were arrested around Onipanu and Palm Grove areas of Lagos.
According to him, “military police arrested soldiers on Ikorodu Expressway.”
Another eye-witness, Ms Victoria Joseph, said motorists and pedestrians panicked during the arrest.

AFC Bournemouth took on the Spanish giants in a pre-season friendly at the Goldsands Stadium on Saturday.

The match attracted thousands of fans. Real Madrid got their pre-season campaign under way with an easy 6-0 victory over Bournemouth in England, with the Portuguese scoring twice.

"It was Ronaldo's first free kick of the game. It went straight for me so I blocked the ball with the palm of my left hand and the force, I suppose, reverberated up my arm and broke my wrist," Charlie Silverwood said.

"Real Madrid is a once in a lifetime opportunity - seeing them play your local club - so I watched the rest of the match, mostly in pain considering I still had the sling, and afterwards I then went to hospital.

"If I hadn't blocked it with the palm of my hand I would have no front teeth. It definitely had to be some speed otherwise it wouldn't have broken my wrist - 45 mph would be a safe guess I think."

Since the incident, he has been visited by Bournemouth legend Steven Fletcher, who brought him the signed Real Madrid shirt.

Charlie said the president of Real Madrid had also phoned to tell him a signed Ronaldo shirt was on the way.

William and Kate name son George Alexander Louis, Follows 300 year old naming tradition.

So, the newly born British prince officially has a name and he's George Alexander Louis, third in line to the throne. 

The baby's last name Louis stands for family tradition and is likely to be a tribute to Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last British Viceroy of India before independence in 1947, according to royal historians. 

Prince Charles was immensely fond of his great-uncle Lord Mountbatten. Known by the Royal Family as Uncle Dickie, he was assassinated by the IRA in August 1979. 

While George stands for royalty and Alexander just possibly because they liked the name, they said. 

George is resolutely royal, and has been the most popular name in the Royal Family over the past 300 years. There have been six King Georges, and the third in line is now set to become King George VII when he accedes to the throne. 

"George is obviously a tribute to the Queen's father and will, I imagine, give Her Majesty great pleasure," Robert Lacey, the historian and biographer, was quoted as saying by The Times newspaper. 

"George was the favourite name from the start and so in that sense the Duke and Duchess reflected a popular trend. I think Prince William said he wanted to get to know him before they chose the name so they must feel he is a George."

Nigerian Airlines To Refund Passengers Two Hours After Flight Delays

The Director, Consumer Protection Directorate of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Adamu Abdullahi, has affirmed that the NCAA law on consumer rights which came into law in September 2012 mandates all airlines operating in the country to refund passengers their airfare after two hours of delaying their flight

Mr Abdullahi stated this as a guest on Channels TV Sunrise daily when asked about the effective implementation of the law and according to him, the largest carrier in the country has recorded a drastic fall in the number of complaints lodged against it because they set up a very viable customer relations desk and managers are empowered to take decisions without considering the cost.

Such decision, as stipulated by law, is that passengers must be served refreshments after an hour of delaying their flight and they must be refunded if the flight is still delayed after two hours.

He warned that as the directorate is now fully empowered with the law, “it will not be business as usual” in the aviation sector as sanctions and penalties will be levied against airlines that default on customers satisfaction.

He estimated that about 50,000 complaints are received per annum.

School Guard Rapes Student Inside Classroom in Lagos

A  civil engineering graduate from Delta State University, Abraka in Delta State, south south Nigeria, who lost his job and was newly employed as a security guard in a private school at Ijegun area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, has been remanded in prison custody for allegedly raping a student of the school inside the school premises.
It was alleged that the 30-year old security guard, Emeka  Nwabunwane, lured the 18-year old student (name withheld)  to a classroom in the school and raped her when she went to the school to attend a tutorial class in preparation for her Joint Admissions And Matriculation Board, JAMB, examination.

It’s A Boy! Kate Middleton Gives Birth To Son

The royal baby has been born and it’s a boy!

Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, safely delivered of a son at 4:24 p.m., according to Kensington Palace.

The birth was announced via a formal press release issued by Kensington Palace, which stated that the duchess "was safely delivered of a son" at 4:22 p.m., local time, weighing 8 lbs., 6 oz.

"The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth," the statement added. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news."

Mother and son are both doing well, the palace said, and will remain in the hospital overnight.

The baby’s name could be a mystery for some time: When William was born, a week passed before his name was announced. Queen Elizabeth didn’t release Charles’s name for a month.

Prince William is expected to take two weeks paternity leave, then return to his military duties as a search and rescue helicopter pilot in Wales.

Within months, the new royal family is expected to move from the couple’s small cottage off the coast of Wales to a four-story home at Kensington Palace, complete with a nursery and a private garden.

British national kidnapped in Nigeria released

A Brit who was kidnapped last week Tuesday after arriving MMA Lagos airport was released on Sunday.

The man was kidnapped on July 16 by gunmen who attacked his car shortly after he left the airport's premises, his Nigerian driver was shot in the hand and the sum of $1million was demanded as ransom.

A combined team of operatives from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, and their counterpart from the Special Intelligence Bureau, SIB, stormed an uncompleted two storey building at Okota Isolo area of Lagos State, rescuing the British national

"We can confirm the release of a British national today in Nigeria, following his abduction on 16 July," a statement from the British High Commission said, giving no further details.

Nigerian student, Jeremiah needs $30k for open heart surgery

Jeremiah Emmanuel is a Nigerian student of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.
He is just 22, but looks an eighty year old.

His problem is that he is ravaged by diseases. Since he was aged 3, he was diagnosed with congenital heart disease and was placed on drugs.Campaigners on his behalf said his condition was stable for some years, but the disease has resurfaced, with some viciousness.

Right now the heart disease has made his stomach, legs and private part swollen and he needs an Open Heart Surgery in India, to stay alive. Doctors diagnosed his health defect as Ventricular septal defect.

We can all be indifferent and allow Jeremiah to die, but we certainly will all bear the burden of guilt for not helping a fellow Nigerian when it matters most.
